"Sensors provide a better understanding of how buildings are really utilised, their occupancy patterns, thermal control needs, and so on. With the deployment of smart sensors, the use of energy by buildings can be better controlled according to building usage. The building sector is facing an energy efficiency challenge which entails optimising energy consumption and flows within buildings. One way of doing this is to integrate sensors that enable optimisation. This means measuring the actual building usage, the occupancy of the different rooms and the exchanges of flows, particularly thermal and light flows, between rooms. The deployment of sensors can make this possible, with sensors targeting key parameters used as feedback for building energy control. And this is how energy efficiency can be optimised by adding sensors to buildings."
