40% of all energy used is consumed by buildings.
15% of greenhouse gas emissions world-wide are due to buildings: 2/3 to residential buildings and 1/3 to tertiary buildings.
43% of residential building emissions and 65% of tertiary building emissions are the result of electricity consumption.
Energy-hungry buildings offer tremendous potential for progress: ways to quickly reduce their consumption are within reach.
Two main avenues for reducing the energy impact of buildings:
- Aim for very high performance levels for new buildings
Buildings are made to last. The technologies are available for new buildings with very high performance. |
- Renovate and improve the performance of existing buildings
The average age of existing buildings is high. Since the renewal rate is very low, existing buildings will need to be renovated in order to reach acceptable performance levels. |
